For software engineers, a commit is an action that records changes to source code in a new version once you’ve completed a task or completed a functional milestone.
For us, Commit is a pseudo-acronym for Coordinated Mission Integration Technology. But most importantly, it describes the call that all mission-led leaders ask of their followers and communities; to lean in and serve. Commit.
I started building data solutions in 2009 at a logistics company that was hemorrhaging customers. Although I was hired to ‘smile-and-dial’ on the sales team, I thought my time would be better spent trying to understand which customers were leaving and why by looking at the data. After building a basic SSIS integration, and adding a sprinkle of Excel magic, we discovered a way to proactively predict who was leaving. Our year over year retention rate improved from 65% to over 90% in just three months.
I went on to build a new service line that generated $3.2 million in its first 18 months. The founder used some of this to fund a trailer full of medical supplies for a jungle hospital in Burma, which made a light bulb turn on for me. Who are the unseen stakeholders that benefit when a business executes its mission well? How much more could a business grow if those stakeholders were engaged in the business somehow?
I continued this process with each role since then by asking: Who are the stakeholders that are known, unknown, winning or losing? What processes can improve to help everyone win? How does the solution help each of them grow?
In 2014 I turned around a struggling water softener business from $187k to $1.2m in 12 months. The owner was able to fulfill his dream of funding scholarships for couples that want to become foster parents. He could also engage his customers to contribute as well through the business; building trust, relationship, and margin.
In 2018 I designed an outcomes based service model for a charity growing into an international leader in poverty alleviation for orphans.
In 2020 I led the implementation for the first custom childcare management software built on Salesforce. Since then, the largest childcare providers in the country are doing the same; rapidly improving the rate of integration and quality for these complex businesses.
In 2022 I helped some organizations bypass SWIFT to get money into Ukraine using public blockchains when the banks were down due to Russian cyber attacks.
Reflecting on these experiences and many others, I have come to witness first hand how elevating mission can be a competitive superpower. Not as a result of virtue signaling, but because serving others naturally generates engagement, builds trust, and coordination for stakeholders, which are natural drivers of profit, sustainability, and further growth.
And this is just the start. No matter what type or organization you are, if you’re a mission-driven leader, I want to serve you. Let us give you a playbook or a solution for how you can better measure stakeholder success, generate impact, and grow your organization. Let’s commit.
